Community Learning Center Intern

Reports to:

Education Coordinator, Director of Youth and Community Programs, Communications Coordinator

Job Summary:

Our organization is searching for an experienced, reliable, flexible, and task-oriented interns. The interns will work directly with the Director of the Community Learning Centers and Director of Programs and will be responsible for performing a number of administrative and programing duties to directly support the Turner Foundation’s Community Learning Centers (CLC), but also its other programs (i.e. Good Life TV, CLC’s, PJW Scholarship Fund, etc.) The ideal candidate is highly self-motivated, professional, and capable of managing their workload and prioritizing tasks in a fast-paced environment. To be successful in this role, you should be well-organized, have great time management skills and be able to act without guidance. Ultimately, you will contribute to the efficiency and efficacy of our organization by providing personalized and timely support to the Director of CLCs and Program Staff. This position is responsible for assisting with tasks given by the Director of the CLCs and/or Director of Programs to support with the day-to-day, future endeavors, and overall success of the Community Learning Centers. The interns should have a clear understanding of the goals and objectives of the Turner Foundation and the Community Learning Centers in relation to its mission and progress. Some aspects of this specific internship will be designed around the intern so as to play to their strengths and interests.

Working Environment / Minimum Physical Requirement:

Must have the physical, visual, and auditory ability to perform the essential duties of the job with or without reasonable accommodations. Requires light physical activity such as phone and computer work. May require walking, driving, light lifting, stooping, crouching, and bending. Background check will be taken upon commencement of internship and results will be submitted to the Turner Foundation office.

Areas of Responsibility:

A.    Enrichment Classes

·      Help set up for classes and innovative programming.

·      Assist staff by picking up, setting up, and distributing food for students.

·      Supervise innovative programming.

·      Assist staff with transporting students to and from CLCs

·      Create dynamic programming for students of various ages.

·      Facilitate innovative programming which fosters an educational environment.

 

B.    Tutoring and Academics

·      Check-in with staff or director before the start of shift.

·      Consistently check-in with students being tutored both inside and outside of tutoring sessions.

·      Tutor and assist students with homework assignments.

·      Track and record students’ progress.

·      Create action plans and items for student’s academic improvement.

·      Check-in after tutoring with staff or director to debrief and update staff on student’s progress.

·      Learn and implement individualized education plan for students you work with.

·      Practice teaching strategies learned from staff coach.

 

C.    Summer Programming

·      Assist in student transportation.

·      Supervise and engage students in summer activities.

·      Assist staff by picking up, setting up, and distributing food for students.

·      Assist with the “Picnic at the Park” program.

·      Support staff running innovative programming.


Skills and Other Requirements:

  • Advanced Microsoft Office skills, with an ability to become familiar with organization-specific programs and software

  • Proficiency in collaboration and delegation of duties

  • Strong organizational, project management and problem-solving skills with impeccable multi-tasking abilities

  • Exceptional interpersonal skills

  • Friendly and professional demeanor

  • Familiarity with office gadgets and applications (e.g. e-calendars and copy machines)

  • Excellent verbal and written communications skills

  • Discretion and confidentiality

  • High School degree

Intern Will Learn And Be Exposed To: 

The intern will be given the opportunity to work in the education field while developing skills needed to work in youth development and a community driven field. They will also be getting the opportunity to learn about nonprofit related business and programming for an after-school program.

·      How to create and support engaging learning settings

·      How to problem solve and implement practical solutions

·      How to effectively plan and organize workshops and events

·      How to communicate with partners and potential donors

·      How to create and implement educational plans for individual and/or small groups of students, ranging from K-12th grade

Details:

  • Part-time position

  • College credit is available for this position

  • Hours: 10-20hrs per week

  • General job schedule (subject to change):

    • Monday-Friday

    • 8am-6:00pm
