How the Doman Method is Changing the Outlook for Autism Diagnoses

One of the amazing resources offered by our friends at Doman International is a book, co-authored by Douglas and Spencer Doman, titled Answering Autism: The Doman Method Plan for Autism, ADD and Neurodevelopmental Delays. This book utilizes the Doman MethodⓇ to give a detailed and practical guide for parents and families to aid in the development of a child with one of these diagnoses.

Autism is one of the most common neurodevelopmental diagnoses a child might receive and is actually largely variable in its presentation and resulting symptoms. This means a child diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) could experience a range of symptoms from only slight delays in verbal speech and fine motor skills to more serious delays in verbal and nonverbal communication, fine and gross motor skills, learning comprehension, sensory hyperactivity, etc. Regardless of where a child’s diagnosis falls on the spectrum, this book is consistently useful in providing practical tools for a parent to give their child what they need.

Oftentimes when a child or individual receives a diagnosis like ASD, ADD, or another disorder dealing with neurodevelopmental delay, it can seem like there are no options, no support, no clear path forward. This can lead to discouragement and loss of hope in both the parents and the child. Doman International is passionate about providing resources to families so that they do not have to experience this despair. Individuals experiencing a neurodevelopmental delay need to feel supported, challenged, and accepted as much as, if not more than, the well individual.

Unfortunately, much of treatment for those with a diagnosis like this is oriented towards minimizing or masking symptoms rather than the root of the problem: brain injury. Most neurodevelopmental disorders are either caused or highly affected by abnormal or deficient brain function. The Doman MethodⓇ begins with that understanding and works to restore and even surpass typical areas of brain function, restoring and creating neural pathways that may have faced difficulty in development in those individuals because of their specific diagnosis.

Doman International maintains that every individual possesses intelligence and potential, and they are committed to helping parents draw that out of their child so they can excel in every area of life. Children with a special needs diagnosis often face much more than just the symptoms of their neurodevelopmental delays; often they also face social ridicule and heightened academic difficulty as a result of their outward-expressing symptoms. Thanks to the Doman MethodⓇ, this no longer has to be the case! The Doman MethodⓇ has proven itself as a consistent and effective method of restoring brain function and consequently reducing symptoms, so children with these diagnoses can engage with their social peers and academics at a normal or even heightened level. Most importantly perhaps, the Doman MethodⓇ provides what some may think impossible at the onset of diagnosis: the ability to live a normal life, free of the limitations associated with a diagnosis.

Not only are we at The Turner Foundation partners with Doman International, we have also interviewed them on Good Life TV!
