Music Program Intern

Reports to:

Director of Music Programs, Director of Community Learning Centers, Communications Coordinator 

Job Summary:

Under the supervision of the Director of Music Programs, a TFMI Program Intern will provide support for multiple core programs including Music Exploration, One on One Music Instruction, Youth Blues & Jazz Band, Music Production, Cross-Curricular Studies, and Music Enrichment Excursions (field trips). Supervise TF youth members in the program area, while assisting with and maintaining TFMI program goals and settings that insure the health and safety of members. Ensure that members actively participate in TFMI core programs and activities. Seek advice and guidance from directors and staff in regard to problems. Provide caring supervision, respect, and recognition for youth efforts. Assist with organizing and implementing a range of program services and activities for enrolled members and visitors that are fun, instructional, educational, meaningful and rewarding. Initiate new programs or program ideas with the approval of the Director of Music Programs as well as make recommendations and share any program concerns. Promote safety, positive values and ethical behavior through quality programming at all times. Provide guidance to members by acting as a positive role model and maintaining a professional appearance at all times. Assist in maintaining inventories of all program equipment and supplies. Ensure all TFMI related supplies and equipment are maintained in good order and make sure to clean and upkeep the program area/studios after usage.

Must have the physical, visual, and auditory ability to perform the essential duties of the

job with or without reasonable accommodations. Requires light physical activity such as phone and computer work. May require walking, driving, light lifting, stooping, crouching, and bending. Background check will be taken upon commencement of internship and results will be submitted to the Turner Foundation office.

Areas of Responsibility: 

Core Music Programs-

  • Facilitate the creativity of our members and inspire them to grow as musicians and individuals

  • Prepare, assist, & facilitate TFMI workshops. This includes assisting with writing and organizing curriculum, project outlines, any instructional material, or preparing/organizing supplies necessary for an effective-successful workshop.

  • Set-up and break down all program activities and workshops

  • Assisting with documenting all TFMI activities and workshops. Taking pictures and videos that include captions/descriptions of content/events.

  • Assist with picking up and dropping off students

  • Demonstrate and describe activities to youth members

  • Help members learn to play music, record music and with any TFMI related activities and projects

  • Be a liaison for TFMI field trips and assist with keeping our members safe and engaged during the duration of the trip

    Music & Film Production-

  • Getting studio equipment ready for recording sessions. This includes mics, mic stands, laying cables, setting up mixers/audio interfaces, powered speakers (mains & monitors), amps, and ensuring all equipment is functioning and ready for a session.

  • Engineer audio sessions using Pro-Tools. Includes setting up sessions according to the context of the recording, record, edit, mix, and bounce out as mp3.

  • Taking direction from Lead Engineer, Director of Music Programs, ensuring the session is properly managed and completed in a timely fashion

  • Guide and encourage members through the studio recording process

  • Assist with capturing music videos and audio

    Administration-

  • Provide office support

  • Send and reply to emails

  • Arranging appointments, booking meetings, & taking minutes

  • Restock and organize office supplies

  • Assist with social media maintenance

  • Create spreadsheets, TFMI youth surveys, flyers, & presentations

  • Handle queries from the Director of Music Programs

  • Organize, store, and print program documents as needed

    Development-

  • Assist with identifying individual and corporate donors and develop strategies to cultivate those relationships

  • Assist with maintaining communication with established donors

  • Assist the Director of Music Programs on the management and planning of fundraisers, outreach performances, and donor receptions

  • Assist with creating program progress reports

    TFMI Program/Studio Maintenance-

  • Keep the music studio clean, organized and safe

  • Change guitar strings

  • Sweep/vacuum

  • Windex windows

  • Learn the layout of the studio and keep it session and tour ready

  • Clean all instruments accordingly

  • Fix instruments

  • Purchase new instruments

  • Wrap-up cables

Skills and Other Requirements:

  • Advanced Microsoft Office skills, with an ability to become familiar with organization-specific programs and software

  • Proficiency in collaboration and delegation of duties

  • Strong organizational, project management and problem-solving skills with impeccable multi-tasking abilities

  • Exceptional interpersonal skills

  • Friendly and professional demeanor

  • Familiarity with office gadgets and applications (e.g. e-calendars and copy machines)

  • Excellent verbal and written communications skills

  • Discretion and confidentiality

  • High School degree

The intern will be given the opportunity to work in the field that promotes a community mindset through the arts. They will receive an inside look at a potential career in youth development, music business & production, and nonprofit related business. They will also be given the opportunity to form experiences and relationships they can build on in the future.

Details:

  • Part-time position

  • Hours: 10-20hrs per week

  • General job schedule (subject to change):

    • Monday-Friday

    • 8am-6:00pm
